ÉVARISTE NDAYISHIMIYE

General Évariste Ndayishimiye, born in 1968 in Musama, Giheta, Gitega Province, Burundi, is a notable Burundian politician who has served as the country's tenth President since June 18, 2020. His political journey began amidst the Burundian Civil War, where he rose through the ranks of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD–FDD), a rebel group that played a pivotal role in the conflict. Following the war, Ndayishimiye transitioned to a military and political career, serving under President Pierre Nkurunziza.

Ndayishimiye's political ascent was marked by his roles as Minister of the Interior and Public Security, and later as the personal military aide to Nkurunziza. His educational pursuits included a degree from Wisdom University of Africa, and he also chaired the Burundi National Olympic Committee during this period. In 2018, Nkurunziza endorsed Ndayishimiye as his successor, a move that led to Ndayishimiye winning the 2020 presidential election with a significant majority.

Upon assuming the presidency, Ndayishimiye reformed the cabinet, reducing its size and appointing former regime loyalists to key positions. His presidency has been characterized by a more open diplomatic stance compared to his predecessor, involving state visits and international engagements. He initially took a proactive approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, although his government was criticized for its vaccine procurement strategy. Ndayishimiye's tenure has included notable international interactions, such as attending the United States–Africa Leaders Summit and meetings with global leaders in Russia and China. His presidency continues to evolve as he navigates both domestic and international challenges. Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89variste_Ndayishimiye
