ABLADE GLOVER

Ablade Glover FGA FRSA CV, born in 1934, stands as a prominent figure in Ghanaian artistry and education. Renowned as a painter and educator, Glover has left an indelible mark on the global art scene, with his works exhibited extensively across the world. Hailing from the La community of Accra in what was formerly known as the Gold Coast (now Ghana), Glover's artistic journey began against the backdrop of Presbyterian mission schools, where he received his early education.

After completing his teacher training at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Glover embarked on a transformative journey abroad, securing a scholarship to study textile design at London's Central School of Art and Design. His educational pursuits continued with further studies in art education at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and postgraduate studies in the United States, culminating in a PhD from Ohio State University in 1974.

Returning to Ghana armed with newfound knowledge and expertise, Glover dedicated himself to shaping the minds of future artists as a professor at the College of Art in the University of Kumasi. Over the next two decades, he ascended through the ranks, eventually assuming positions of department head and college dean.

In addition to his academic contributions, Glover made significant strides in the realm of art curation and promotion. He founded the Artists Alliance Gallery in Accra, providing a platform not only for his own creations but also for the works of other esteemed artists. His gallery, a beacon of artistic expression, showcases a diverse array of pieces, including those of artists like Owusu-Ankomah and George O. Hughes, alongside local artifacts.

Glover's artistic style is characterized by a dynamic interplay between abstraction and realism, often depicting vibrant urban landscapes, bustling markets, and the resilient women of Ghana. His fascination with portraying women stems from a deep appreciation for their courage and elegance, a sentiment reflected in his evocative artworks.

Throughout his illustrious career, Glover has garnered numerous accolades and honors, including the Order of the Volta in Ghana and the Millennium Excellence Award. He is celebrated as a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, and a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, cementing his status as a luminary in the world of art and education.
