Introduction
About
BIOGRAPHY
Jawaharlal Nehru, born on November 14, 1889, was a pivotal figure in India's struggle for independence and its subsequent development as a modern nation. As an anti-colonial nationalist, statesman, and author, Nehru played a central role in shaping India's trajectory during the mid-20th century.
Educated in England and trained as a lawyer, Nehru returned to India and became increasingly involved in national politics, eventually joining the Indian National Congress. He emerged as a leader within the Congress, advocating for complete independence from British rule. Supported by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru rose to prominence within the party and was elected as its president in 1929.
During the 1930s, Nehru and the Congress dominated Indian politics, promoting the idea of a secular nation-state. Despite periods of imprisonment and political upheaval, Nehru's vision of a democratic, secular India gained momentum. Following India's independence in 1947, Nehru became the country's first Prime Minister and played a crucial role in steering India's development as a modern nation-state.
Nehru's tenure as Prime Minister, lasting 16 years, was marked by ambitious economic, social, and political reforms. He championed pluralistic democracy, secularism, and scientific advancement, while also playing a leading role in international affairs. Nehru's efforts led to the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement, positioning India as a key player on the global stage.
Under Nehru's leadership, the Congress Party dominated Indian politics, winning multiple elections and solidifying its position as the nation's leading political force. Nehru's legacy as the "architect of Modern India" is celebrated, and his birthday is honored as Children's Day in India.
Nehru's premiership came to an end with his death in 1964, but his influence and legacy continue to shape India's political, social, and cultural landscape to this day.
