Ishrat Husain is a distinguished Pakistani banker, economist, and public servant, known for his significant contributions to Pakistan's economic policies and financial institutions. Born on June 17, 1941, in Allahabad, British India, Husain moved to Pakistan after the partition in 1947. He completed his early education in Karachi and later earned a bachelor's degree from Government College, Lahore. Husain furthered his education at Williams College in Massachusetts, USA, where he obtained a Master's degree in Development Economics. He then earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Boston University.


Husain's career spans several decades and includes numerous high-profile roles in both national and international institutions. He joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1964 and held various important positions within the government. His international career began at the World Bank, where he served for over two decades. During his tenure at the World Bank, Husain held various senior positions, including Director of the Poverty and Social Policy Department, Chief Economist for Africa, and Chief Economist for East Asia and the Pacific Region. His work at the World Bank was marked by his focus on poverty reduction, social development, and economic reforms in developing countries.


In 1999, Husain returned to Pakistan to take on the role of Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, a position he held until 2005. As Governor, he played a pivotal role in stabilizing Pakistan's economy, implementing banking sector reforms, and improving the country's financial infrastructure. His tenure is credited with enhancing the credibility and independence of the central bank, fostering economic stability, and promoting growth.


Following his tenure at the State Bank, Husain continued to contribute to Pakistan's economic and educational sectors. He served as the Dean and Director of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Karachi, one of Pakistan's premier business schools.
