Kofi Abrefa Busia, popularly known as Dr K. A. Busia, was born on July 11, 1913, in Wenchi, Gold Coast (now Ghana). He was a Ghanaian statesman, academic, and politician who played a significant role in Ghana's political history.

Busia received a quality education and became a prominent scholar. He obtained his Ph.D. in Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Busia's academic career took him to several universities in Africa, Europe, and the United States, where he taught and conducted research on social and political issues.

In the early 1950s, Busia became involved in politics and joined the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), a prominent nationalist party fighting for Ghana's independence from British colonial rule. He advocated for self-government and played a vital role in shaping the UGCC's policies and strategies.

Following Ghana's independence in 1957, Busia continued his political activities and founded the Ghana Democratic Party (GDP) in 1967. He was a strong advocate for democracy, constitutionalism, and economic development. Busia championed the principles of individual freedoms, human rights, and free-market policies.

In 1969, Busia became the Prime Minister of Ghana after leading the Progress Party (PP) to victory in the general elections. However, Busia's government faced challenges, including political opposition and economic difficulties. His administration was overthrown in a military coup led by Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong in 1972, leading to a period of military rule in Ghana.

After the coup, Busia went into exile and continued his academic pursuits and political activism from abroad. He remained an influential figure in Ghanaian politics and was respected for his intellectual contributions and commitment to democratic governance.
