About

Benedict "Ben" Jammeh, a prominent figure in Gambian civil service, law enforcement, and intelligence, made significant contributions to his country's governance and security apparatus throughout his career.

Born in Kanilai in 1957, Jammeh's early education took place at St. Anthony Primary School before proceeding to St. Edward Secondary School and later St. Augustine's High School, where he graduated in 1976. He pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and an LLB Honors degree. His academic pursuits reflected his commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.

Jammeh's career trajectory encompassed diverse roles, starting with his service in the Field Force from 1980 to 1982, followed by a transition to the teaching profession. He taught at various institutions, including St. George's and Kerewan Samba Sirrah, before obtaining his teaching qualifications from The Gambia College. Subsequently, he taught at Gambia High School, where he imparted knowledge in history, geography, and Bible studies.

In 2000, Jammeh transitioned to law enforcement, joining the police force, where he rose through the ranks. He furthered his legal education by pursuing a law degree from the University of London, which he completed in 2007. His dedication and competence led to his appointment as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in April 2007, a position he held until June 2008.

Following his tenure as IGP, Jammeh assumed the role of Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in June 2008, demonstrating his versatility in security matters. He continued his service in various capacities, including as a legal advisor at the National Training Authority (NTA) and a part-time lecturer in business law at the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI).

Jammeh's career trajectory faced challenges, including legal proceedings related to his tenure at the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDEA). However, his commitment to public service remained steadfast.

After spending four years in exile in Senegal, Jammeh returned to The Gambia under the new government of Adama Barrow. Tragically, he passed away in April 2018 at the age of 61, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to his country.

In recognition of his service and contributions, Jammeh was posthumously honored as an Officer of the Order of the Republic of The Gambia in 2011, underscoring his significant impact on the nation.
